Pot

  • A clay pot in the shape of two dogs. Purchased in Mexico.

Attributed to the Teotihuacan culture, circa 500 AD.

The dogs on this pot were modeled after the Xoloitzcuintli, an ancient hairless dog breed native to Mexico. The breed was considered sacred by the Aztecs. They were often sacrificed and buried with their owners in the belief that the dogs had the ability to guide spirits to the land of the dead.
