Atlantic horseshoe crab

  • A specimen of an Atlantic horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus).

Collected in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina by Dr. Bryce C. Brown in 1959.

Today's horseshoe crabs are often called "living fossils," since they are so similar to the fossilized horseshoe crabs which date back to the Ordovician period, 480 million years ago.
