Labret

  • A stone labret or lip plug. Possibly made in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica.

Collected in Tlacotepec, Toluca, Mexico. Collection date and collector unknown.

T-shaped labrets are traditionally associated with the indigenous Otomi people who have lived in Mexico from 5000 BC to present. They can be made out of stone, bone, clay, or obsidian and may have gold or turquoise inlays.
