Bead or spindle whorl

  • A stone bead or spindle whorl. Possibly made in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica.

Purchased in Mexico.

In Mesoamerica, beads were often an indication of social status and rank. Spindle whorls were used as a weight attached to a spindle, a straight spike usually made from wood used for spinning and twisting fibers. The weight of the whorl helped to maintain the speed of the spin.
