Whistle jar

  • A whistle jar in the shape of a bird.

Purchased in Peru and attributed to the Mochica civilization, 100 to 700 AD.

The whistling function on these jars is believed to be both utilitarian and ceremonial. The whistle provided a vent to accelerate the passage of air when pouring a liquid as well as producing sound.
