Snuff bottle

• A carved snuff bottle with an image of a dragon. Possibly of Chinese origin.

The habit of sniffing snuff, a fine ground tobacco, spread to China in the mid-17th century from European explorers and traders. The more humid Asian climate made the European snuff box impractical for preventing the contents from spoiling. The snuff bottle with its smaller mouth and stopper was the solution.
